SMT Tape Stapler-Style Splice Tool - Automatic, Fast-Cycle Splicing for Zero - Downtime SMT Production

The Sierra Electronics Stapler-Style SMT Tape Splice Tool is the fastest, most operator-friendly splicing system in the SMT industry. Engineered and machined in the USA, this tool uses a 20-splice automatic cartridge that advances a new splice shim after every crimp, allowing rapid, consistent, and high-strength splicing with perfect alignment and no failures.

Chinese-imported splice tools and tapes routinely misalign, delaminate, bend under light pressure, or pop off under feeder tension. The Sierra stapler-style tool eliminates these problems entirely by delivering a mechanically locked, U.S.-made splice that remains stable under the most demanding feeder loads.

Ideal for high-speed SMT lines that demand both speed and reliability, this tool allows operators to splice a new reel to a depleted reel while the pick-and-place machine is still running, maintaining maximum production uptime.

Product Description

The Sierra Electronics Stapler-Style SMT Splice Tool uses a precision-guided splice shim cartridge containing up to 20 mechanical splice shims. This system provides uninterrupted, back-to-back splicing capability, enabling operators to keep SMT lines running continuously with no feeder stoppage and no loss of alignment.

Our U.S.-made splice shims, alignment pins, hold-down bars, and spring-tensioned cartridge system ensure a splice that holds through the full feeder cycle, even in high-speed applications where imported splices typically fail.

Step-by-Step Operating Instructions

  1. Load the Splice Shim Cartridge
    1. Insert the splice shim cartridge from the back of the tool into the slide housing.
    2. Push it forward until the cartridge grooves engage the alignment pins at the front of the tool.
    3. Press the spring-loaded tension release to apply constant pressure on the cartridge.

This ensures each new splice shim advances into position automatically after every crimp.

  1. Position the New Reel Tape
    1. Pull the leader from the new SMD reel.
    2. Place the tape end on one half of the exposed splice shim, aligning sprocket holes to the precision pins.
    3. Engage the hold-down bars to secure the carrier tape flat and centered.

This prevents slippage and misalignment during the crimp.

  1. Position the Depleted Reel Tape
    1. Take the end of the depleted reel currently running in the machine.
    2. Place this tape on the other half of the splice shim, again aligning sprocket holes to the pins.
    3. Ensure both tapes meet evenly over the shim.

Accurate alignment is critical to proper feeder travel.

  1. Crimp the Splice
    1. Fully squeeze the stapler-style tool handle until the crimp completes.
    2. The tool will open automatically when the splice is fully set.
    3. The internal mechanism advances the next splice shim into position.

This creates a high-strength mechanical splice ready for immediate use.

  1. Remove the Spliced Tape

Lift the spliced carrier tape from the tool and inspect it for proper alignment and a fully set mechanical crimp.

  1. Apply the Covertape Connector
    1. Select the correct covertape connector size (8, 12, 16, or 24 mm).
    2. Apply the connector across the two peel cover tapes.
    3. Press firmly across the full length.

This ensures correct peel-back in the feeder and smooth travel through the pick-and-place system.

Imported splice tapes routinely fail here because their adhesive is too weak to handle feeder pull forces, causing the splice to pop off mid-run.

Why Chinese Splice Tapes Fail

Chinese-import splice tapes frequently:

  • Pop off under feeder tension
  • Delaminate during peel-back
  • Misalign due to weak tooling and soft pins
  • Leave adhesive on feeder pucks
  • Cause mispicks and feeder jams
  • Contaminate or destroy expensive pick-up nozzles
  • Force operators to stop production and manually re-feed tape

These failures cost SMT lines significant downtime and reduce production yield.

Why the Sierra Stapler-Style Tool Is the Industry Leader

  • Automatic 20-splice cartridge for rapid operation
  • Spring-loaded advancement mechanism
  • Precision-machined alignment pins
  • Perfect 3.5 mm sprocket-hole spacing
  • Zero pop-offs or delamination
  • No adhesive contamination
  • Durable U.S.-machined construction
  • Built for 24/7 high-volume production environments

The jaws don’t drift. The punch doesn’t miss. You’ll hit the exact spot over and over again, like a machine with muscle memory.

No Power? No Problem.
No plugs, no charging, no lag. It’s 100% mechanical and always ready—because your downtime shouldn’t wait for a reboot.

Works Across Tape Types
8mm, 12mm, 16mm, 24mm… paper or plastic—bring it on. This tool grips and clips like it was born to do it.

Portable and Brutally Durable
Throw it in a tool bag. Drop it on the floor. Still works. It’s all metal, no delicate nonsense.

Fast Learning Curve
Show someone once and they’re good to go. It’s that easy. This isn’t rocket science—it’s smart, street-level engineering.

Antistat Splicing Tool, Stapler Style FAQs

1. What does this thing actually do?

Simple—it staples metal splice clips into SMD carrier tape. Clean, fast, strong. No tape, no glue. Just press and go.

2. Is it really like a stapler?

Yep. Same motion. Same instinct. But instead of paper, you’re fusing two pieces of carrier tape so your line doesn’t skip a beat.

3. What kind of tapes can I use it on?

8mm to 24mm wide, paper or plastic, embossed or flat. If your machine feeds it, this tool clips it.

4. Will the splice hold during high-speed runs?

Rock solid. It’s made for production lines, not arts and crafts. The splice stays tight, flat, and jam-free.

5. What about the clips? Are they included?

The tool doesn’t come with clips by default, but we’ve got compatible metal splice clips ready to roll. Easy to reload.

6. How long does a splice take?

Under 10 seconds if you’re moving slow. Under 5 if you’re in the zone.

7. Can I throw it in my toolbox?

Yes. It’s built tough. Toss it, drop it, forget about it—it’ll still work when you come back to it.
